Fans in the Stands: Brickyard 400 program illustration
This piece was commissioned through the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to run in the official 2007 program for the AllState Brickyard 400 motor-car race. It was featured as a two page spread and ran in conjunction with text written by the staff of the Speedway art department. The idea came from Mandy Walsh, a designer for the Speedway who I have worked with for a number of years. Basically, while you are sitting in the stands during the race, you can keep track of the different types of fans you see and compare them with their caricature. She gave me ten basic typical fans, and I filled in the rest with various other ideas we discussed at lunch with Ryan Long. Then Ryan provided the graphic design and final layout to coincide with the look of the book. It was a great collaborative project and I believe the final piece with text is very entertaining.
